The Basics

How the Method Works: Three Shifts, in Order

The order matters. Each shift builds on the one before it.

1

The Perspective Shift. From blame to accountability. When we feel threatened, we blame. We read our partner’s mistakes as flaws in their character, and excuse our own as the result of a bad day. In this shift, you learn to see the pattern between you as the problem, not your partner. Then you take full responsibility for your side of it, without the “but”.

2

The Physiological Shift. From flooded to calm. When stress takes over, your heart races, your jaw tightens and clear thinking becomes harder. This shift teaches you to notice that moment, call a pause, and return when you’re calm. It also teaches you to lead with relief: when your partner is upset, you soothe first and solve later, so their thinking brain can come back online.

3

The Behavioural Shift. From conflict to repair. Only when you are calm can new habits stick. Here you learn to raise a complaint without attacking (a “soft startup”), to listen for understanding on the problems that never fully go away (Gottman found most couples’ conflicts are of this kind), and to repair quickly after a rupture. You also agree your own Shared Principles of Governance: promises about fairness and respect, made when you’re calm, that protect the relationship when feelings run high.

Your questions answered

FAQ

  • The Rewiring Love Method is a three-step approach to couples therapy created by Naomi Light, a couples therapist in Petersfield, Hampshire. It moves couples through three shifts in order: from blame to accountability, from flooded to calm, and from conflict to repair. It draws on research by John and Julie Gottman and on Stan Tatkin’s PACT approach.

  • Both. The method is the framework behind my couples therapy sessions, my private intensives and the Rewiring Love Course, a live online course for couples. In therapy I tailor it to your relationship, in person or online. The course teaches the same three shifts in a group format.

  • It can help. The shifts begin with your own responses, so you can change your half of the pattern without your partner’s involvement, and a relationship tends to respond when one person changes. I can’t predict how your partner will react. See Individual Relationship Support.

  • Most advice teaches what to say but not what to do when your body is in alarm. This method works in order: how you see the problem, how your body responds under stress, and only then new communication skills. That order is why the skills are more likely to hold in a real argument.

  • It draws on established models, including John and Julie Gottman’s work on conflict and repair, and Stan Tatkin’s PACT approach to attachment and nervous system regulation. The Rewiring Love Method itself is my own framework, and I can’t guarantee results for any individual couple.
